What was your first job?
Well you could say a shop assistant, at 16. ... Still in Southampton.
What made you decide to work there?
Well there was no alternative in those days. There was no Child Allowance or anything like that. We just had to go to work.
Did you learn any new skills when you were there?
No, no only to sell stuff.
What were your particular memories of working there?
Very happy, very happy I was with a lovely lot of girls, that used to help me and yes I was very happy.
What hours did you work whilst you were there?
I don't know ... I know the first Saturday I worked there was 1 o'clock to 9 and I came out with 5 and 4 pence and my Mum was waiting there for me. That's how things were.
What did you do in your time off?
Didn't have any time off. No no no.
